It had been several months since we decided to start trying to get pregnant. Given my age, this was perfectly normal. But in the back of my head I couldn’t help but worry that maybe this would be a big test for us – that we’d have to wait years and years to get pregnant. Then Ramadan came and I stopped all my google searches about fertility, put my heart in my hands and raised them up sincerely to Ar Rahman. One morning after Fajr I was doing my daily Quran recitation and I was in Surah Al-E-Imran and was reciting about the mother of Maryam alayhasalam. How she dedicated that which was in her womb to the service of the masjid or temple. She assumed that this would be a boy, but Allah knew the best response to her dua and blessed her with a baby girl named Maryam, one of the best women to ever live.

Maryam grew up in the masjid worshipping Allah and was under the care of Zakariya alahisalam. One day he entered her place in the masjid and found her eating off-season fruits and was shocked. When he asked her where she got these from, her response was that this is from Allah and He gives rizq to whoever He wills without measure.

Maryam’s unwavering belief and trust in Allah inspired Zakaryia alayhisalam, who was older and without children, to immediately seclude himself and make dua to Ar-Razzaq. He said “rabbi habli miladunka zurriyatan tayyibah, innaka samiu dua” The translation is, “My Lord grant me from Your bounty, righteous offspring. Verily You are the One who is the hearer of supplications.” Immediately an Angel came to Zakariya alayhisalam and gave him the glad tidings of a son named Yahya, who would also be a prophet. (see Surah 2: 35-39). Just like Zakariya alayhisalam was inspired by Maryam alayhasalam, this whole story inspired me. I was determined to memorize this dua that day and recite at every iftar and as often as I could at other times. I also told my husband about this dua and encouraged him to recite it.

Iftar after iftar I made this dua and increased in the last 10 nights of Ramadan. It was a great feeling to be reciting this dua of one of the Prophets (this is a benefit of learning Quranic duas). Anyways, a little over 2 months later at Eid al-Adha we found out that I was expecting. Allahu Akbar! InnAllah samiu dua (Verily Allah is the one who hears duas)! Writing this post has reminded me that I should now go back and look through the duas that have been made for children. In particular, the duas of Maryam’s mother and the duas of Maryam for Isa come to my mind.

I’ll have to look into those and any others. InshaAllah that will be a topic of a future post.
